Today on our Wednesdays with @Kady live chat:

  • Yesterday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper finally introduced a motion in the House of Commons to extend Canada's mission against ISIS for a year, putting any end date well past the 2015 election. But the motion also expands the fight into Syria, if necessary. Why this change in mandate now? Plus, the government insists that its forces will not be part of the key ground battles underway, as Iraqi forces push to retake key cities from ISIS forces. How realistic is that, however, given what we've learned so far about Canada's "advisors" role? Finally, is the right balance being struck between humanitarian aid and boots on the ground?
  • As the public safety committee hearings on C-51, the anti-terrorism legislation, continue, what have we learned about both the concerns about the bill as well as the government's intentions for it? Will any amendments make it through the committee process? Are the Conservative ranks split over any of the oversight provisions or threats to civil rights and free speech? While everyone calls for an opportunity for debate and discussion, is there any point to all this talk if nothing changes as a result of it?
