In what may well be a strategic effort to boost the sudden surge of support his party has enjoyed in Quebec in recent weeks, Prime Minister Stephen Harper heads to Victoriaville, where, alongside Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney, Infrastructure Minister Denis Lebel and Senator Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu, he will take part in a roundtable discussion on an topic left coyly unspecified in the advisory.
Later this afternoon, he'll make an announcement, and take questions from the press.
Back in Toronto, New Democrat Leader Tom Mulcair wraps up a week-long tour of the city and environs with a visit to a Mississauga restaurant, where he will, according to the notice, "get behind the counter to help out with Fayaz Karim," who is slated to run for the party in Mississauga-Streetsville.
Also in Toronto today: Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, who will deliver still more federal assistance to the food processing sector during a stop at Scarborough-based Tradition Fine Foods before heading downtown to show his government's support for the hog industry at the annual meeting of Canada Pork International.
Outside the city but within the vote-rich Greater Toronto Area, Transport Minister Lisa Raitt teams up with local MP Terence Young at an Oakville community centre, where the pair will share news on "safe medication management," while in Kitchener, Minister of State for FedDev Ontario Gary Goodyear and local MP Stephen Woodworth drop off a fresh instalment of federal funding at MappedIn Inc.
Also out and about today:
- Health Minister Rona Ambrose heads to the Go Auto Arena in St. Albert to give an update on the status of her government's ongoing efforts to install defibrillators in community arenas.
- Elsewhere in Alberta, Justice Minister Peter MacKay teams up with Yukon MP Ryan Leef to hand out new money at a Calgary-area community centre, while Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification Minister Michelle Rempel drops by the University of Calgary with news on her government's latest investment to boost advancements in carbon capture and storage technology.
- Finally, Labour and Status of Women Minister Kellie Leitch joins local MP Nina Grewal for an "important announcement" at the Centre for Advanced Wood Processing at the University of British Columbia.
Later this afternoon, Canadian Joint Operations Command representative Captain Paul Forget will lay out the latest developments in Canada's ongoing military activities in Iraq at a technical briefing for reporters.
