Stephen Harper joins Southern Ontario MPs in St. Catharines

As the winter parliamentary recess winds to a close, Prime Minister Stephen Harper takes a day trip to St. Catharines, where he'll join Southern Ontario MPs Dean Allison and Rick Dykstra for an otherwise unspecified announcement at a local frame shop.

On the opposition front, New Democrat Leader Tom Mulcair shares his thoughts on the future of the CBC in Montreal, while Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau spends the morning engaged in a closed-door conversation on the economy with the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce before making himself available to reporters at noon.

Meanwhile, Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney heads to the United Nations headquarters in New York City to "deliver a statement addressing concerns of a worldwide rise in anti-Semitism" at an informal meeting organized by the UN General Assembly.

Liberal MP Irwin Cotler is also on the guest list for the one-day session, and will take part in an expert panel on the issue this afternoon.

Also this afternoon: Defence Minister Rob Nicholson hosts a teleconference from London, where he will provide an update on "recent discussions held with foreign delegations on the subject of the political and military aspects of the coalition to combat the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant."

Elsewhere on the ministerial circuit:

  • Infrastructure Minister Denis Lebel makes his way to Desbiens City Hall to outline the details of his government's support for four "community infrastructures" in the Lac-Saint-Jean-Est region.
  • Minister of State for Science and Technology Ed Holder teams up with Kitchener-Waterloo MP Peter Braid for a tour of the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo, which will also serve as backdrop for what the advisory bills as a "significant federal investment" in quantum information research.
  • In Edmonton, Western Economic Diversification Minister Michelle Rempel drops by the University of Alberta with a fresh load of federal cash to "strengthen innovation and commercialization opportunities for Alberta's life sciences sector."
  • Finally, Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford gives a keynote lunch address at the 12thannual Premier's BC Natural Resource Forum in Prince George.
