A controversial figure has been elected in a town byelection in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Reg Bowers soundly defeated Tina Holden to win the race Thursday night. Holden was the only other candidate in the election.

Bowers is the former campaign manager and official agent for Peter Penashue, who resigned as a federal Conservative MP in March 2013 amid a cloud of controversy related to contributions to his 2011 campaign.

It was revealed that a corporate donation had been accepted by Penashue's campaign, which is illegal under Canadian law.

Bowers was a central figure in the controversy, admitting that he had unintentionally accepted a corporate donation to the campaign.

Bowers later resigned from a position with the Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board.

During the ordeal, Penashue blamed the irregularities on Bowers being inexperienced in running a campaign.

Penashue resigned in order to run in a byelection, but was defeated by Liberal Yvonne Jones, the current MP for Labrador.

The Happy Valley-Goose Bay town council reported that 920 people voted in Thursday night's byelection.
