Male escort to testify as Senate prostitution bill hearings wrap up

The Senate legal and constitutional affairs committee is set to wrap up three days of witness testimony on the government's proposed prostitution law rewrite — but not before hearing from Maxime Durocher, who will be the first male sex worker to share his thoughts on the proposal in a parliamentary forum.

Durocher will be accompanied by Tyler Megarry, who works with Montreal-based REZO, an organization that offers support to male sex workers.

In an interview with CBC News last week, Durocher said he planned to explain how criminalizing clients would hurt his female clients.

"These are sweet women, they wouldn't hurt a fly, and they need some help in their life," he told CBC News.

"I'm there to give them whatever they need. Because of [criminalization of clients], maybe I'd lose some of them, and they might lose the ability to contact someone to help them out in that area."

Durocher and Megarry are slated to appear as part of the final panel of witnesses before the Senate pre-study wraps up, at least for the moment.

On Wednesday, senators were forced to suspend their afternoon session after an outburst from retired dominatrix Terri-Jean Bedford.

Bedford, who is one of the three appellants behind the successful Supreme Court challenge, refused to stop talking when asked to do so by committee chair Bob Runciman, who eventually summoned Senate security to escort her from the building.

Before she was removed from the proceedings, however, Bedford did have time to issue a veiled threat to "make you forget about Mike Duffy."

"I got more information and proof on politicians in this country than you can shake a stick at. I promise," she told the committee.

The proposed changes still have to get the final nod of approval from the House of Commons before the bill is officially sent to the Senate for further consideration.

  • Chris Bruckert, Professor, Department of Criminology, University of Ottawa (As an individual)
  • Michèle Léveillé, Member, Gatineau (Canadian Association of Sexual Assault Centres)
  • Keira Smith-Tague, Front Line Anti-Violence Worker (Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter)
