Bodies of Canadians killed in Taliban attack returned home

The bodies of two Canadian auditors killed in a Taliban attack last week in Kabul, Afghanistan, have been returned to Canada.

The bodies of Peter McSheffrey, 49, and Martin Glazer, 43,  were aboard a Department of National Defence plane and arrived at CFB Trenton in Ontario late Wednesday night.

They were repatriated just after 11 p.m. ET.

McSheffrey, who's from Ottawa, and Glazer, from nearby Gatineau, Que., were among 21 people killed when two gunmen and a suicide bomber attacked La Taverna du Liban restaurant on Jan. 17.

The attack was the deadliest violence against foreign civilians in Afghanistan since the start of the war nearly 13 years ago.

Both men worked as auditors for the financial services company, Samson & Associates, and were in Afghanistan to assess projects delivered by non-governmental organizations.

The Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development financially backed the projects, according to a spokeswoman.

They had been in Kabul for less than a week and had been scheduled to return to Canada this week, according to their boss, Pierre Samson.

Glazer's funeral is scheduled for Feb. 1 in Gatineau at Notre-Dame-du-Très-Saint-Rosaire church. The details for McSheffrey's funeral have not been released.

Glazer's family has asked for any donations to be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Trips for Kids Ottawa, a group that promotes cycling for underprivileged children.
