Much of the second day of the NDP's policy convention in Montreal will put the spotlight on party leader Tom Mulcair, one year after he was chosen to succeed Jack Layton.
New Democrats will cast ballots at 10 a.m. in a confidence vote on Mulcair's leadership.
Then he'll take the stage at 2:15 p.m. ET for his keynote speech.
Mulcair took centre stage Friday night as he answered questions from New Democrats on topics ranging from labour relations to the environment.
"They're attacking workers' ability to have a decent living wage," Mulcair said of the Conservative government's labour reform initiatives.
"It's time for us to stand up and say we can do better. We will do better."
'Build the jobs here'
The NDP leader also reiterated his support for using a cap-and-trade system to put a price on carbon emissions, as well as for a pipeline that runs west to east, which he says would allow Canada to refine and use its own bitumen.
"Build the jobs here," Mulcair said.
"This just in. If you're building a pipeline from Alberta to the Texas Gulf Coast, you're creating jobs in the United States. You're not creating them in Canada," he added, referring to the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.
Mulcair also said he would create a cabinet committee to manage First Nations issues.
Before Mulcair took the stage, delegates viewed a video featuring some of his family and friends talking about his work and his family life before he became NDP leader.
Party officials say they want people to have the chance to see a different side of Mulcair, one that Canadians won't see when he does verbal battle with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in question period.
Earlier in the day, delegates voted on motions:
- supporting supply management in the dairy, egg and poultry sectors.
- reaffirming its commitment to collective bargaining.
- reaffirming its commitment to pay equity.
- strengthening the employment insurance system.
- commiting to ongoing funding for Via Rail.
