First Nations concerned about oilsands, pipeline

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 20 Maret 2013 | 21.16

First Nations leaders from the United States and Canada are holding a news conference in Ottawa today to speak about their concerns over oilsands projects and proposed pipeline routes affecting traditional territories.

Chiefs and hereditary leaders of the Yinka Dene Alliance, Yankton Sioux, Athabasca Chipewyan and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations will be at the event.

First Nations in northern Alberta have long been concerned about the environmental effect of Alberta's oilsands development.

And many aboriginal groups are opposed to proposed projects to pipe that bitumen to refineries in the U.S., as the Keystone XL pipeline would do, or west, as Enbridge's Northern Gateway twin line is slated to do.

The news conference is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. ET.
