First Nations chiefs and activists are promising to stage Canada-wide protests today, as part of the Idle No More movement's national day of action.
Major cities across the country are bracing for serious traffic disruptions and possible blockades. Here is a partial overview of some of the Idle No More activities expected in several cities today (all times listed are local):
- Fredericton, New Brunswick: March through the street starting at the St. Mary's First Nation at 11 a.m.
- Miramichi, New Brunswick: A planned blockade of the bridge there, but not confirmation.
- Montreal: An evening "teach-in" rally at 4 p.m. at the Centre Récréatif, Culturel et Sportif St-Zotique.
- Toronto: A rally at the British Consulate at noon.
- Windsor, Ont.: A March and blockade of the Ambassador Bridge is expected to begin around 11 a.m.
- Nipigon, Ont.: A blockade of Hwy. 11/17 is planned.
- Cayuga, Ont.: A round dance and flash mob are being planned for 9:15 a.m. outside the town's court house.
- Whitehorse: A prayer circle will be held at the Nàkwät'à Kų̀ Potlatch House starting at 6 p.m.
- Regina: A Reconciliation Ride and Walk will begin at around noon, with First Nations riders and drummers entering the city on Highways 6 and 11, then making their way to the provincial legislature.
- Manitoba: Blockades and rallies are planned in The Pas in northern Manitoba and at the Fairford First Nation, north of Winnipeg, among other locations. Some CN and CP railway lines may also be targeted by demonstrators at noon.
- Edmonton: Members of the Papaschase First Nation plan to block the QEII Highway near the entrance to their former reserve in south Edmonton. The two-hour blockade is scheduled for 1 p.m. near Gateway Park.
- Vancouver Island: Members of the Saanich Peninsula First Nation will set up a blockade on the Pat Bay Highway for half an hour, starting at 11 a.m.
