Nine candidates vying for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada will be tested when the party kicks off the first of five federal leadership debates in Vancouver on Sunday.

The candidates running for the party's top job are MPs Marc Garneau, Joyce Murray and Justin Trudeau, former MPs Martin Cauchon and Martha Hall Findlay, lawyers David Bertschi, Deborah Coyne and George Takach, and Karen McCrimmon, a retired Lieutenant Colonel.

The two-hour bilingual debate will kick-off with opening statements from each candidate, followed by a question-and-answer session that will allow for debates in groups of three, and end with closing statements.

Topics of debate will include economic issues such as the challenges facing Canada's Aboriginals, foreign ownership, the environment, social housing, trade and electoral cooperation.

The second debate will take place on Saturday, Feb. 2 in Winnipeg.

A new leader will be chosen on April 14 in Ottawa.
