Embattled Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Peter Penashue is expected to provide some answers to his constituents in Labrador today about irregularities in his 2011 federal election campaign.
On Nov. 6, Penashue promised reporters outside the House of Commons in Ottawa that he would do just that during today's visit to his riding.
"Look, I'm under pressure. There's lots going on," said Penashue at the time. "I want to speak to my constituents and explain what happened during the election."
Campaign irregularities
The federal minister has not explained how the name of Pennecon, a St. John's construction company, showed up on a bank deposit slip to his 2011 federal election campaign account, though his campaign issued receipts to six executives at the company.
The company has given generously to Progressive Conservative election campaigns in Newfoundland and Labrador, but in federal elections, corporate donations are illegal.
Penashue has not said what he knew about the contributions.
Penashue has also been dogged by questions about overspending on his campaign and thousands of dollars in free flights during the 2011 federal election, which he won by just 79 votes.
The Conservatives have said a new official agent is working with Elections Canada to work on those issues.
Liberal MP not expecting much
Liberal MP Scott Andrews, who represents the Newfoundland and Labrador riding of Avalon, said he was not expecting any major revelations.

(CBC) "He'll probably come and speak to a few Conservative supporters and friends and then say he's explained it," speculated Andrews. "And people are going to tell him he did nothing wrong."
Andrews added that he thinks it's time for Penashue to take responsibility for breaking election rules.
"We need to hear him take ownership for what's gone on and admit that he's made a mistake," said Andrews. "He's going to resign and run a fair election."
Telephone survey on Tory support
Meanwhile, a telephone survey has been measuring the mood in Labrador on voter support for Penashue and the Conservative Party.
Kathy Russell, a Labrador resident who did not vote for Penashue, said she received a curious telephone call last week.
"They said it was a one-question survey and they asked if I would vote for Peter Penashue or Stephen Harper," said Russell. "I said no, they said 'thanks for your time' and that's it. I didn't know what to make of it. I just thought it was kind of lame."
Officials at Penashue's office said that although the minister and his constituents would be meeting today, Penashue had no set schedule and no time to do media interviews.
